Review of SCRAPPED PRINCESS by Ichiro Sakaki

    A TALE OF DESTINY

    TokyoPop, October 2006

For thousands of years, the priests have given their annual prophesy--and almost every one has come true. So, when they prophesy that a soon-to-be-born princess will cause the world's destruction, it's clear that the princess must be, well, scrapped. But the Queen isn't willing to simply let her daughter be murdered and one of her servants spirits Princess Pacifica away, giving her to a couple to raise with their own children.

When Pacifica's adoptive parents are murdered, she and her siblings realize that the assassins have discovered them. Pacifica's brother, Shannon, and sister, Raquel, resolve to save Pacifica--even if it means confronting every assassin and soldier in the world.

SCRAPPED PRINCESS has the feeling and background of a fairy tale, but there just isn't much here. I think it's supposed to be funny, with a chicken who fights off Pacifica using martial arts every time she wants an egg and with Pacifica's own habit of whining all the time while her foster siblings sacrifice everything to keep her alive, but the humor just didn't work for me.

I was surprised at the end of this short novel to discover that it is the first of 13 volumes in the saga of the scrapped princess. What can I say? I've enjoyed the other novels I've read in the TokyoPop label. The concept of the SCRAPPED PRINCESS has promise, but the delivery fell short. I don't think I'll be reading the next twelve books in this series.
