Review of BECKETT'S CINDERELLA by Dixie Browning

    MAN OF THE MONTH

    Silhouette Desire #1453, August 2002

When her ex-husband turned out to be a con-man, Liza Chandler lost all confidence in men and in her ability to chose them. Now she's living with her uncle, helping run his small and broken down shop, and doing everything she can to avoid any contact with sexy men--men like Lancelot (Beckett) Beckett.

In his twenties, Beckett was left at the alter so he's not any more interested in a long-term relationship than is Liza. All he wants is to give her the money that one of his remote anscestors stole from one of hers. If he can do this, his grandfather can finally have peace and Beckett can get on with his life. Only Liza suspects Beckett is playing a con on her and refuses to go along--which means that Beckett has to become persuasive and spend more time with the beautiful and damaged heroine.

Author Dixis Browning occasionally beats us over the head with the conflict and spends too much time in introspection, having her characters mentally repeat the reasons they don't want to get involved, but once she gets the characters interacting, truly believable sparks fly. Both Beckett and Liza learn about both themselves and each other as they fight, try to survive a hurricane, and make love. Browning adds a comic subplot that works to compound the delight.
